This Ottoman shamshir dates from the late 18th century, and is equipped with a Magyar, or Hungarian blade. A type that was very popular in Turkey and Syria.
This shamshir is of a very rare and unique type that showcases this steel knuckle bow and upturned quillon. These shamshirs turn up once in a while, not always with the same blade, but with identical hilts, leading to believe they were meant for some specific group. The guards are always roughly soldered in place at the pommel, and held with tar resin. The latter is missing, but I could easily restore it if you wished.
The grip is horn, and shows some wear, but is in good shape. The blade is in excellent shape with no pitting at all, and with etchings in very good condition.
This is a truly unique piece for collectors of shamshir and Middle Eastern swords.
