Sold – 1500s German blade on 1800s Russian hilt

This is a very unique piece of rehilting done in the 19th century. During the romantic era, it was common to rehilt older blades -sometimes family heirlooms- on new hilts. In this case, a late 16th to early 17th century German broadsword blade was attached to a 19th century brass hilt decorated with the arms of the Russian Empire. This custom made hilt was made with great attention to details.

The grip is made of mahogany, a rare material for sword grips, and has a few splits but remains solidly in place. The blade is in good shape considering the age. The mark of the swordsmith is still visible, but hard to decipher.

Russian swords usually carry big prices, and blades of this period are also rare and expensive.
